On the fourth day, Australia is staring into a possible defeat and was 141 for 5 at the close of play. The hosts declared their second innings at 314 for 3 and gave huge target of 516 runs. Gambhir scored a century(104).

Hayden and Katich gave Australia a one-day cricket like start smashing 49 runs in 46 balls. Then Harbhajan struck with 3 wickets and Ishant Sharma chipped in with 2 wickets. Australia was reduced to 58 for 5.
