Unique Identity Number to all Indians from 2010
Citizens of India will get a Unique Identity Number(UIN) from 2010 which would remain a permanent identifier from birth to death, obviating the need for multiple photo identification documentary proofs.
An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has on November 4 cleared the establishment of a Unique Identity (UID) Authority, to be set up under the Planning Commission, for the purpose.
The UID is expected to become available to an initial set of users by early 2010.
The UID Authority will formulate a detailed proposal covering the full cost of implementation, full contingent of staff needed and place it before the Cabinet for its approval by December.
