CPI(M) and SP routed in by-elections
The Communist Party of India(Marxist) and the Samajwadi Party have been routed in the recent by by-elections held for state assemblies and the Lok Sabha.
The Congress candidate Raj Babbar won the Firozabad Lok Sabha seat defeating Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav by an overwhelming 85,343 votes. Of the 11 Assembly seats in UP which went to the polls on Saturday, the BSP won nine.
In West Bengal and Kerala, the CPI(M)-led Left bloc once again faced a humiliating defeat at the hands of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamul Congress and the Congress Party. In West Bengal, seven of the 10 Assembly seats for which by-elections were held went to Trinamul, one to the Congress, one to an Independent supported by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and only one to Forward Bloc. In Kerala, all three seats went to the Congress.
