Ashok Chavan sworn in as Maharashtra CM

Congress leader Ashok Chavan took charge of the office of Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Saturday evening. Governor S.C. Jamir administered the oath of office and secrecy to Chavan, of the Congress party, at the Raj Bhavan. Nationalist Congress Party leader Chhagan Bhujbal took oath as deputy chief minister. Ashok Chavan faces a stern test of his leadership and managing skills through the troubled waters of coalition politics which took 15 days of hard bargaining between Congress and NCP over portfolios and the number of ministerial berths. The selection of Chavan also underlines the importance of political inheritance in Congress. He inherited the political legacy of his late father S B Chavan, becoming the first father-son duo in the state’s history to adorn the chief ministerial chair. The senior Chavan was a loyalist of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
