Life Imprisonment for Acid attackers
On behalf of a teenaged Delhi girl Laxmi, advocate Aparna Bhat filed a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking a direction from the court for enacting a law that provided exemplary punishment to those throwing acid on girls as also a pragmatic rehabilitation scheme for the victims.
Additional solicitor general Mohan Parasaran told a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam that there had been a change in thinking in the government parlance and it was in favour of making acid attacks a serious offence by amending the provision of IPC
The court granted him eight weeks time to come back with a concrete proposal in this regard.
The Home ministry is contemplating to add a new section, Section 326A which equates acid attack with the provisions of Section 326 that deals with crimes that cause grievous injuries using deadly weapons and carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
