Subhapradam Movie Review

The Film

Subhapradam is another example of director K Viswanath’s obsessive fixation with music as if every film has to deal only with musicians.

The Synopsis

Indumathi (Manjari Phadnis) is from a family of music lovers. Her father (Vizag Prasad) is a Telugu man while her mother is Malayali. She has two doting uncles (Ashok Kumar and Gundu Sudarshan who are married to a

Bengali and a Tamilian respectively.

Chakri (Allari Naresh) is a natural singer but without proper training in music. Indu falls in love with Chakri. The twist in the tale is the arrival of Shivananda Murthy (Sharat Babu) who is actually sick and alone but in fact a rich businessman whose grand daughter Sindhu (Manjari Phadnis again) was a victim of college ragging. How Murthy’s involvement changes the lives of Chakri and Indu forms the rest of the story.

The Performances

Allari Naresh, with his now well known carefully careless style of acting is the only saving grace of the film. Manjari is good and has potential. Sharat Babu has not lost his thespian expertise. All others fill in the supporting cameos.

The Techniques

With a weak story and pedantic screenplay, the narration takes a beating in creating any viewer interest on the proceedings on the screen. Music alone cannot sustain relationships on screen and in a complex world, human relationships function at more complex levels and at different dimensions. Director K Viswanath appears to have lost his magic touch. His obsession with music and musicians is cramping his creative output. Technically the film is average.

The Verdict

Subhapradam is one film where the audience eagerly awaits the Subham card on the end titles.
