The Film
Coming from the director of Sethu and Shiva Putrudu (Pitamagan in Tamil), the film Nenu Devudni is not an
off-beat film; it is totally an off-track film. This is not a historical nor a neither mythological and not even contemporary film.
The Synopsis
At the behest of an astrologer, a father leaves his son Rudra (Arya) in Kasi. He comes along with his daughter and finds his son has now become an Aghora sanyasi who is called Kala Bhairavudu.
At the instance of his Guru, Rudra goes back to his native village and lives with a group of sanyasins. There is a baddie in the village who thrives by organizing a ring of blind beggars. Pooja, a blind girl, escapes from the clutches of the goons and comes in contact with Kala Bhairava.
The Aghora Kala Bhairava then decimates the don of the beggar mafia.
The Performances
Only Arya is given any scope to show some histrionics. All other artistes suffer from lack of characterization of their roles and have no way to show any acting prowess. Pooja does well as a blind girl.
The Techniques
There is no story as such to be narrated. There is no logic in the delineation of characters nor in the conception of scenes. Even the director of the film seems to be totally oblivious to the purpose of the film. The theme appears to be that only an Aghora sadhu can tackle evil men. What is the use of good technical work, when there is no story to narrate od a character to relate to?
The Verdict
Nenu Devudni is the most purposeless and illogical films of recent times. Disturbing and gory visuals alone will not make a film. This mindless film is eminently avoidable.
Director Bala should know that everything old need not be gold; sometimes the old can be just a bizarre rotten Rustica pizza.
