The Film
Milenge Milenge with the tag line …The True Love Saga, explores in the usual filmy formula style whether marriages are made in heaven or love is destined by fate or by any pre-conceived oracle and not of one’s free will.
The film is slightly inspired by the Hollywood film Serendipity is a 2001 romantic comedy, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. It was written by Marc Klein and directed by Peter Chelsom.
The Synopsis
Priya (Kareena Kapoor) believes in true love and awaits a perfect match to be married to and live happily ever after. A tarot card interpreter (Kirron Kher) predicts that Priya will meet her ideal mate on a specific date and also describes the clothes he would wear on that day.
Off Priya goes to Bangkok to attend a youth festival and lo and behold she comes across Amit (Shahid Kapur) on the same day wearing the same clothes as predicted by the tarot card reader. Priya is certain that he is the guy who is destined to be her life partner. She even jots down the specific characteristics, attitudes, attributes and qualities her would-be mate ought to have. Amit fools around pretending to be Priya’s destiny in love. When Priya comes to know of Amit’s deceit, they both part ways, but now it is the turn of Amit to believe that Priya is his destined love and spouse.
Will the tarot prediction come true or is fate has something cruel in store for them? The title of the film, of course, is a give away.
The Performances
Since the film was made when Shahid and Kareena were having a passionate romance, both of them sizzle with an affectionate chemistry on screen. Being accomplished thespians, both essay their roles with consummate ease. All others are part of the side-show props and acquit themselves well.
The Techniques
An interesting story line is marred by clichéd incidents and contrived situations. The director Satish Kaushik seems to be slightly out of touch with his craft. The story and theme suffers from not being contemporary. The sufi music by Himmesh Reshmayya is pleasing on the ears. Cinematography by Sriram is good. The film’s narration gives you the feeling of tasting not so new wine in an old bottle.
The Verdict
Milenge Milenge has its finer points and has in equal measure certain parts that are not exactly appreciable.
Phir be, Milenge Milenge ko ek baar milsakte hai.
