The Film
Luck is a highly stylized film with very good presentation and deals with risk taking at great odds just like life. The film is a metaphor for life and how people gamble rather recklessly to win at any cost.
The Synopsis
Moosa (Sanjay Dutt) is a top order betting ring master and he wants to revolutionise the odds in gambling by raising the risk factors straight up to death defying actions. He assembles people who have proof of ample luck like Veer Pratap (Mithun Chakraborty), Tamang Thapa (Danny Denzongpa), Ram (Imran Khan), Raghav (Ravi Kissen), Ayesha (Shruti Hasan) and others.
Then starts spine chilling, death defying, adrenaline flowing, high risk contests which will give Rs 20 Crore to the winner. The contests include a revolver sequence, the helicopter jump, swimming under shark infested waters and finally the train episode. There is also section where deceit and intelligence is required to win.
The rest of the story deals with how the contestants compete and the ultimate winner emerges.
The Performances
Sanjay Dutt perfectly suited the role and carries it with great elan and aplomb. He gives such a performance that one feels only he can do the role and no one else. Imran Khan is maturing fast and acquits himself with an A grade. He is very good in the stunt scenes.
Mithun and Danny give very competent and convincing performances. As usual, Danny stands out in the crowd. Ravi Kissen is the surprise package. He truly comes out with a stunning performance. Shruthi Hasan does not look like a debutante. She gives a very star-like and stellar performance in a double role. All others are quite adequate in their roles.
The Techniques
Soham Shah and Rensil D’Silva have come out with a very good story with a conceptualized theme but they would have done better had they avoided distractions of romance and an unnecessary extension of the climax.
The presentation of the film is top class and it takes care of any deficiencies in the screenplay. But the way the action scenes have been conceived is something that is not normally done in Bollywood. The opening and climax train sequences are simply superb and we have not seen such scenes in Indian cinema so far.
Cinematography by Santosh Thundiyil is visually vibrant and of world standards. Salim-Sulaiman gives foot-tapping music. Background music by Amar Mohile enhances the narration value. The sound design and audiography as a whole is an asset to the film. The best part of the movie is the orchestration of stunts by Allan Amin. The production vales are high.
The Verdict
Luck is a highly stylish and visually vibrant film with a theme that is alien to the audience so far. This is a must for action film buffs and also for the others just for the sheer beauty of presentation.
You will be unlucky, cinema viewing-wise, if you miss watching Soham Shah’s Luck.
