The Film
Leader is a hard hitting film about the present state of politics and the wayward ways of the politicians.
The Synopsis
The chief minister Sanjeevayya (Suman) is killed in bomb blast. His elder brother Mahadevayya (Kota Srinivasa Rao) is the schemer in the party. Dhanunjay (Subba Raju) plans to become the CM with the help of his uncle (Rao Ramesh) and another political group leader Munuswamy (Ahuthi Prasad).
Arjun, son of late Sanjeevayya, who did his PhD from Harward University and working as a CEO for a MNC, comes back to India to attend the funeral of his father. With the support of his mother (Suhasini), Arjun outwits Dhanunjay and others and becomes the CM. With the support of the Chief Secretary (Tanikella Bharani) he wants the Anti-Corruption Bureau to raid all the corrupt officers with an aim to create a peoples fund of one lakh crore rupees.
He comes to know that his father was corrupt and has black money of twenty thousand crore which he gives away to the peoples fund. He has the help of Ali (Harshavardhan) and media reporter Radha (Priya Anand). He also has a love interest in Archana (Richa Gangopadhyay), daughter of Munuswamy.
All the politicians oppose this anti-corruption drive. They plan to pull him down as CM. The rest of the film deals with the ways in which he deals with the emerging political situation and how he transforms from a politician to a leader of the masses.
The Performances
Rana Daggubati performed very well in an author backed role and he does not make you feel that this is his debut movie. He is here to stay for a long time. Subbaraju excels as the bad politician. Kota Srinivasa Rao, Ahuthi Prasad, Harshavardhan, Rao Ramesh and Tanikella Bharani live their roles. Richa Gangopadhyay does well in a nicely etched role. Priya Anand as the babbling reporter is good. Suman in a cameo is OK. Suhasini as the mother is very convincing. Uday Bhanu sizzles in the item number. All others are adequate in their roles.
The Techniques
Once again Sekha Kammula comes out with a very topical story, dialogues with a punch, gripping screenplay and good direction. He has etched his characters very well and all the main characters are very close to real life. The second half has a bit of slow narration while depicting the introspection of Arjun and his affair with Archana. Music by Mickey J Mayor adds to the narration. Cinematography by Vijay C Kumar is vibrant and visually pleasing. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is crisp. The production values are high.
The Verdict
Leader is a political film that somehow reflects the present pathetic political scenario and must be watched for the sheer variety of the theme and narration. This is a performance oriented film and you will definitely enjoy Sekha Kammula’s latest offering. The film has an un-preached message to the educated youth of today and in general to all the people about the present political system.
