The Film
Kissan is a dramatic tribute to the age-old agrarian conflict and almost a modern take of Manoj Kumar’s classic film “Upkaar”.
The Synopsis
Dayal Singh (Jackie Shroff) is a widower and landlord in a typical Indian village. He brings up his two sons Aman (Arbaaz Khan) and Jigar (Sohail Khan) like any agriculturist father. Attaining youthfulness, both the sons choose separate ways for their livelihood.
While Jigar stays back in the village and takes care of the agricultural lands of his father, Aman goes to the city gets educated and becomes a lawyer.
Sohan Seth (Dalip Tahil), a businessman has plans to expand his business empire and he requires lot of land to ground his enterprise. He starts buying land from the farmers. Trouble arises when he wants to acquire the land of Dayal. The issue brings the brothers Aman and Jigar on the opposite sides of the issue and they are at loggerheads.
The rest of the story revolves around the reconciliation of the dispute.
The Performances
Jackie Shroff gives a very convincing performance while Dalip Tahil does well as a sophisticated but cunning villain. Arbaz Khan is effective but his perpetual frown is distracting. Sohail Khan is energetic and essays his role effortlessly.
Dia and Nauheed fit their roles well though they have not much to do. Sharat Saxena and Vishwajeet Pradhan do not get much of a footage to do justice for their roles.
The Techniques
Though the theme is as old as Indian cinema and the story is not new, director Puneet Sira makes the narration interesting with some dramatic incidents and a screenplay has sufficient gripping elements. Having the remix of the song “Mere Desh Ki Dharti” from “Upkaar” is quite a good idea.
Daboo Malik’s music is not very exciting but suits the moods.
Cinematography by Neelabh Kaul is very good and captures the essence of rural ambience.
The Verdict
Kissan is a sensitive story very sensibly told with good performances by Jackie, Sohail and Dalip. But the film is quite engaging and deserves a look.
