Girish Karnad is UNESCO Theatre ambassador

Renowned Kannada playwright and actor Girish Karnad, has been elected as a World Theatre Ambassador of UNESCO’s International Theatre Institute.
The International Theatre Institute was founded 60 years ago with UNESCO aid to promote an international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts (drama, dance, music) in order to consolidate peace and friendship among peoples of the world.
Karnad, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Bharatiya Gnanpeeth award in 1999, said translations of Indian theatrical works into English will facilitate a wider audience and there should be translations into Spanish, French and Chinese.
